New Program Offerings from IDI at NC State

Hands of all skin tones meeting together

IDI at NC State is a collaborative effort between OIED and our campus partners to offer an exploration into individual and group cultural competency.

Cultural competence is the ability to successfully interact with people of different backgrounds and recognize differences in people’s experiences. IDI at NC State provides participants two measures: 1) where they believe they are on the cultural competence continuum and 2) where they actually are in terms of how their behavior, knowledge and disposition are experienced by others.

IDI at NC State seeks to do the following:

  • create a campus culture that supports culturally diverse interactions across differences;
  • provide resources for individuals to build their cultural competence;
  • provide guidance for constructive conversations across differences;
  • provide resources for productive intercultural interactions;
  • provide safe spaces/brave spaces;
  • provide opportunities to understand implications of cultures and cultural difference;
  • encourage community members to welcome and initiate conversations across cultures.

IDI at NC State operates through a four-tiered approach:
