The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity’s Equal Opportunity and Equity unit presents the fourth installment of its “How-To” series of articles aimed toward informing the campus community about critical programs and services. The Wolfpack includes students from more than 120 countries representing a multitude of backgrounds, cultures and religions. NC State maintains information regarding cultural and religious observances online to assist staff, faculty, and supervisors in maintaining an affirming environment for everyone.

Participating in diversity and equity workshops grows awareness institutionally and helps to promote these themes year-round. In addition, faculty can add religious holidays to their Moodle courses to promote heightened awareness for the plethora of observances that occur each semester.

Providing space for all individuals of all cultures to participate in activities and celebrations, including religious holidays, ensures that our campus remains a welcoming space for all. Some religious and cultural observances held in December and January include Bodhi Day, Winter Solstice, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Gantan-sai, Nativity of Christ and Chinese New Year, among several others.

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity works to ensure that our campus provides a diverse, inclusive environment. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination in employment based on religion, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act prohibits discrimination in educational programs receiving federal funding, and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution provides for the principles of freedom of religion in the United States. NC State University’s Equal Opportunity, Non-Discrimination and Affirmative Action Policy (NC State Policy 04.25.05) prohibits discrimination and harassment based on religion.

As the semester and calendar year come to an end, we would like to take a moment to acknowledge the contributions of every community member, event and educational program brought to and provided by our vibrant campus community. Thank you for making NC State a dynamic and inclusive place to “think and do.”

Happy and Inclusive Holidays!
