“Beyond the Veil” Returns

Young, smiling woman in hijabThe NC State Women’s Center is proud to co-sponsor “Beyond the Veil,” an annual program held with the Muslim Students Association (MSA). “Beyond the Veil” features a panel of hijab and non-hijab women discussing gender, faith, hair, hair coverings and meaning in our community. It challenges the widely held American association between hijab and oppression and gives voice to Muslim women who define empowerment for themselves. Program participants can also learn about the hijab by pairing with a member of MSA to wear hijab for a day together. Although a one-day trial could never approximate the experiences of hijab-wearing students, it gives participants an opportunity to demystify veiling and build a relationship with a student they may not have had otherwise. “Beyond the Veil” will be held Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. in Park Shops 201 and is a WISE and Scholars Event.
