IDI at NC State

The premier cross-cultural assessment of intercultural competence

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is an instrument that assesses intercultural competence — the capability to shift cultural perspective and appropriately adapt behavior to cultural differences and commonalities. This 50-item questionnaire is available in 17 languages, can be accessed online and takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete. After taking the assessment, the IDI generates 1) an Individual Profile Report that outlines the individual’s capacity to shift perspectives and appropriately adapt behaviors, and 2) an Individual Development Plan (IDP) – a detailed blueprint for the individual to further develop their cultural competence.

Watch a video introduction to the IDI.

In addition to the IDI being a great tool for personal development, it can also be used in a team setting. Teams may use the IDI for one or more of the following reasons:

  • to measure the development of intercultural competence in a group over time;
  • to use as a tool to develop, train and/or mentor faculty, staff or students;
  • to solidify a unit’s diversity, equity, and inclusion goals and objectives; and
  • to use as an instructional tool in the classroom.

Gold

Our gold level participants will experience both individual and group levels of engagement. The program will initiate with participants completing the IDI assessment and subsequently receiving their IDI profile, Development Plan, and completing a debrief with a Qualified Administrator. After exploring one’s own cultural competency, the participant will engage with their group to receive a collective debrief. The group debrief will explore the group’s cultural competency based on the contributions of each group member’s IDI assessment and will receive a group profile. Gold-level participants will receive priority seating in OIED certificate programs.

Platinum

The platinum level of the IDI at NC State is focused on an extended experience between participant groups and the Wolfpack IDI team. This level of engagement will focus on both the individual and the collective group. Individuals will complete the IDI assessment and receive their IDI Profile, Development Plan, and a debrief with a Qualified Administrator. Following completion of the individual assessment and analysis, the focus will shift towards exploring the cultural competency of the group through the analysis of the group’s IDI Profile. Through professionally facilitated sessions, participating groups will understand their collective cultural competency, develop intentional practices to advance their individual and collective cultural competency, and engage in the creation of meaningful, measurable outcomes to advance their cultural competency. In addition, those groups that choose to participate at the platinum level will also receive priority participation in all OIED certificate programs, discounted post-IDI evaluative assessments, and curated resources towards cultural competency growth.
