OIED Offers Diversity and Equity Workshops All Year

With the end of the academic year right around the corner, you may be looking ahead to your next step. If you are a staff or faculty member, that may be your annual review. If you are a student, it may be professional employment or graduate school. For all of these undertakings, attending an OIED workshop or two might help complete your list of skills and accomplishments and prepare you for that next achievement.

OIED’s Education and Training unit provides training for NC State staff, students, and faculty throughout the academic year. Workshops cover a range of topics in the areas of diversity and equity, making them applicable to everyone. Most workshops are only two hours in length and are absolutely free to the NC State community.

Equal Opportunty Institute (EOI)

For those who have already taken some OIED workshops, why not consider enrolling in the Equal Opportunity Institute (EOI) next fall? EOI participants take three required workshops and choose seven electives. In addition, the program offers guidance and support throughout the year, including an orientation session, a mid-year lunch, and a festive and celebratory graduation, at which graduates receive a framed certificate. In 2013, a “Graduate Scholar” designation was added to provide EOI graduates a way to receive recognition for returning to take additional OIED workshops. There is a reason why graduates want to return to this award-winning program; come find out!

National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) Workshops

The third major training offering of OIED is the Building Bridges series of prejudice reduction workshops, based on the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) model. NC State’s own campus affiliate NCBI Team, comprised solely of volunteers from all over campus, facilitates these trainings. Last year, the NC State NCBI Team facilitated over 40 workshops to over 1,100 participants. Program evaluations have included comments such as “groundbreaking” and “life-changing.” If you have not yet experienced this NC State institution, it might be your time to do so.

Last Chance to Obtain a Women's Center Sponsorship Package
The NC State Women’s Center is preparing for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. This year, the Center will be hosting 3 major events: Take Back the Night (TBTN): April 10, 2014; Sex Signals: April 15, 2014; and Denim Day: April 23, 2014. Watch the Digest for more information about these events.

NC State departments are asked to sponsor these 2014 events. All sponsors will receive a packet that includes buttons and information for Denim Day, fliers for the Sex Signals improv comedy show, and TBTN T-shirts. As an added benefit, sponsoring department names will appear on the back of the TBTN T-shirt. By being listed on the shirt, you will let the campus community know that you support a safe environment – one that is free of rape, physical, and sexual assault.

The sponsorship levels are: Platinum - $250 (receive 20 T-shirts), Gold - $125 (receive 10 T-shirts), Silver - $75 (receive 6 T-shirts) Bronze - $25 (receive 2 T-shirts). Platinum sponsors will be able to put their logo and name on the back of the T-shirt. These spots are limited. Additional shirts may be purchased for $12 each. We ask that you wear your shirts on the day of the event or donate them back to us so that we can give shirts away to students who attend the event. Any remaining funds after the event will be donated to help finance Interpersonal Violence Services at the Women’s Center. These services include crisis counseling, the Survivors’ Fund, resources, and referrals. We thank you in advance for your willingness to support survivors and raise awareness about gender violence. Building Community: Connecting the Dots - An American Indian Education Summit on Higher Ed
The Graduate School and the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) - cordially invite you to participate in Building Community: Connecting the Dots - An American Indian Education Summit on Higher Education. The event is on March 24, 2014 at the JC Raulston Arborteum. Mission: to create an opportunity to bring together scholars, practitioners,and community in dialogue on the recruitment, retention, and graduation of American Indian students. Chancellor's Creating Community Awards Now Accepting 2014 Nominations in Five Categories
The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) and the University Diversity Advisory Committee are seeking nominations for the 8th annual diversity awards, which will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 11:00AM in the Talley Student Center Ballroom. The Chancellor's Creating Community Awards recognizes faculty, staff, colleges, students, and student organizations that have made exceptional efforts and contributions in the areas of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
