HERMonies: Black Sounds, Black Voices, Black Movements

February 15 - March 15, 2022.

As we celebrate Black History Month in February and Women’s HERstory Month in March, the African American Cultural Center and the Women’s Center will host an exhibit titled “HERMonies: Black Sounds, Black Voices, Black Movements,” focusing on the influence that Black women musical artists have had in advancing social justice movements through music. Throughout history, music has been an integral part of social movements. Powerful Black women have used their voices for activism to shed light on important social justice issues.

Join us as we look back on some of the songs and moments that defined and continue to define Black movements in our society. In the fight for freedom, Black women have steadily led the way for centuries. Whether it was the Underground Railroad, the voices of unsung leaders of the suffrage movement or other efforts for greater liberation, Black women have contributed. But an element that is often overlooked is the role that music plays in moving Black movements. Black women have amplified their voices in music by speaking up and speaking out lyrically.

For this exhibit, we ask that you please bring headphones to engage with the music within the exhibit and also have the Spotify application loaded on your phone to engage with our QR Codes.
